A little less conversation

It seems that these days I don’t have the idea to write anything on this blog anymore. Busy schedule? Maybe, but I’m not that busy. I manage to squeeze in at least 10 hours of gaming each week.

Like I said in my previous post, priority. There’s so much to be done. A famous person once said “Don’t complain that you have too much work, or Allah will take it all back from you. When you have no work at all, and you’ll regret it.” All I can do is work hard and hope for the best.

My priority now is my work, and my wedding preparation. I’ll have at least once a week to update my blog (and that other blog).

Let’s just say I’m putting on hold my gaming project until I’m married. *count fingers* Less than 3 months. Yikes.

DD : Daredevil?

Actually the term I’m going to use is the Double Developer. So this is going to be an IT post. Brace yourself, the jargons are coming.

I believe the term Double Developer is first coined by Ryan here. The “tl;dr” version: a double developer is someone who is not only develop on the current project employed by his/her company but also develop another project on his/her own.

So, “what’s the problem?” you say. Most employers doesn’t allow you to be involve in other project that does not benefits the company. This is because you might using the resource that you should be using for your current project and use it for your own project instead.

My previous company had that in the contract clause. I am not allowed to be involve in another project as long as I’m tied to the company. The new company I’m working with doesn’t have that in the contract clause. In fact, I could work from home to complete my project.

Now here’s my problem. I have a lot of side projects to work on. How do I prioritize which comes first? This is my personal opinion.

The most important thing I look for is Financial value. Which projects is going to benefit me greatly? As I am getting married in a few months (sorry girls), this is the most relevant weightage that I look at. And also, I need something to keep it rolling first.

Next is Personal relationship. Um, yeah. Some projects have an important benefactor or shareholder. Close friend, family, spouse. Imagine if they found out I’m not doing the thing they entrusted me with.

Third. Passion. Sorry, passion. As much as I want to follow my heart, my head is the one tells me how to survive in this cruel world. But once you’re not tied by finance or personal relationship, follow your heart. Do the thing that you like. Live your life to the fullest. <insert more cheesy phrase here>.

Skyrim

First off, let me get this straight. I’ve never been a fan of The Elder’s Scroll. I played the first hour of Oblivion and back then, it doesn’t interest me. I was never a fan of “First Person” back in the old days.

When Skyrim was first announced, I was not intrigued to play it. But I can’t say no to a game with good graphics. So I preordered it on Steam.

I didn’t hope this to be a good game. Coming from the maker of Fallout series, I expect this game has a lot of bugs. When I click that play button, all in my head was “Meh, this is just like any RPG”. Man, I WAS WRONG.

This isn’t just Skyrim. It’s The Elder’s Scroll V: Skyrim. A game of epic proportion. This is where a game that is life changing. Some kid is going to play this game thinking “One day, I wanna make a game like this”.

First, let’s talk about controls. I’m playing the PC version of the game, so traditionally the weapon of choice is a mouse and keyboard. But some reviewers recommend using the XBox 360 controller for a more intuitive gameplay session. Yes, they were right. The LT and RT button feels exactly like your “left arm” and your “right arm”. Instead of using just your index and middle finger on the mouse (that sounds so wrong).

You have the First Person View and Third Person View on Skyrim. However, I suggest to fully enjoy Skyrim, use the “First Person” view. It will help you a lot in combat.

Oh, let’s talk about the gameplay. The game doesn’t define what class you should take. In fact, you can change classes as you progress. Similar to FF Job System, you are what you are holding.

If you want to be a warrior, use a close combat weapon. If you want to be an archer, use bow and arrow. You want to be a mage? Equip spells. You can even equip a “fireball” on your left hand and a “lightning bolt” on your right hand to create a more destructive spell.

By the way, since this is a fantasy game, you’ll be fighting dragons. A lot of dragons. Which bring us to the storyline. You are do-vah-kiin. Or Dragonborn. A mortal that was born with the soul of a dragon. Each time you slain a dragon, you’ll be able to absorb the dragon’s soul. Using the dragon’s soul, you can learn “shouts” which is a powerful incantation in a dragon’s language.

Before this, dragons were merely legends of the past until Alduin the dragon show up. More and more dragons begin to appear in Skyrim and attacking main cities. And later you’ll find out you are the chosen one to defeat Alduin.

Final verdict? You should play this game. Undoubtedly Game of the Year 2011.

Counting Days

6 days. That is all the time I have in my current company. Some said that I am excited to leave the company. Nope. I wish I don’t have to leave.

I don’t hate the company. In fact, I love the culture at the company. Everyone treat each other like a family member. But the main problem is my future wife is an employee of that company.

Oh the things you do for love.

“But Ed, don’t you want to work alongside your wife each day?”

Sure, I do. But it’s a lot of risk to take if both husband and wife work at the same company. What if the company goes bankrupt? What would happen to our life? Wouldn’t it be a huge risk?

It’s all about taking risk. I am for one are taking risk with the new company. What if I fail?

I rather fail than not knowing what could have been.

The other thing is, I already achieve what I want in that company. That’s the problem. I aimed too low. It is time that I focus back on my main target, to develop a game. And I hope to achieve that before I’m 30. After that, I hope to open a game development studio of my own. Is it too hard to achieve? Sure, but I don’t care. As long as I don’t stop pursuing my dreams.

Back with a vengeance

Err.. Not really. I’m just happy that I’m getting another job. One that pays almost twice and I’ll still have time to do other things. But it’s not the pay that I am interested in. It’s the culture and the commitment. The passion of doing the stuff that you love.

I love programming. Heck, I’ve been doing programming since I’m 11. I have to thanks my mom for that because she was a programmer and she owns a computer since early 80s ( and I get to play with that pc).

During my pre Universities year, programming was just a hobby. And my main interest was Arts and Drama. I even attend Scriptwriting classes at that time. But my mom persuaded me into taking Computer Science, because of the instability of the economy at that time. And that is all how it all began.

During my 4 long exhausting years, I’ve been a programmer, a system analyst and a database administrator at my current company. I have forgotten the reason that why I work there and therefore become annoyed by my own job.

One day, I was assigned to be a programmer again, because of insufficient resource. I realize that this is what I love. This is the reason why my life make sense. There’s beauty in the thing I build, I compile and it turn out awesome.

So, this is my advice for you. Actually it is an advice from Steve Jobs. Love what you do.

If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. First of all. Sorry for the long hiatus. I have been very busy with work for the last 2 months. Projects piled up on me. Suddenly, I am the jack of all trades. I am the programmer, the web designer, the database administrator, the system analyst and the project manager. In 5 different projects.

A slow month

It’s August. No games that I look forward to will be releasing this month. Gears of Wars 3 will be released this September.

No movies that I really want to watch premiering this month. No good movies next month either (except for that one malay movie I want to watch. tee hee =p )

And it’s not TV season which will start in September.

Premier League will only start at the end of this month, beginning with Charity Shield.

Genesis

My second console was the Sega Genesis (aka Sega Megadrive) which my dad bought for me in 1992 (I think) . I didn’t knew much about video games back then. I only want it because it’s the first time I saw Sonic on the console at a shop and I said to my dad, I want that for my birthday. I was 9.

However, the games that was popular among my friends was Street Of Rage (aka Bare Knuckle) and I still remember the day we grinded to reach the final boss Mr X. It was an epic battle.

Today, I still have the console, still in it’s original box. I’ll probably give it away to my friend someday, because he’s a retro gamer. All that will be left is this dynamic theme for my PS3.

Yeah. It doesn’t look like a wizard game. In fact, it looks like a typical shooter game. Remember how the first Potter game like?

In that game, you have to move your wand(mouse) into a certain shape to cast your spell. Sure, it’s hard before this, but now we have motion controllers like Kinect, Move and Wii. The game should look like this.

Two is a company,

But multiplayer is a crowd.

Sometimes I feel that certain games shouldn’t do multiplayer. It kinda ruin the feel of the game. Yes, I’m looking at you Uncharted and Assassin’s Creed. Don’t get me wrong. I love multiplayer. TF2? WoW? Monday Night Combat? Battlefield? Call of Duty? I love them all kinds of them.

I think if they did a co-op on Uncharted is great. Puzzle solving and third person shooters go well together. But that is just my opinion.

Multiplayer on the other hand, hurm… Uncharted differentiate each player by character and weapons. There’s no class what so ever. Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood have different abilities for each character/player. But still, it’s like everyone’s playing Spy on Team Fortress 2 (which is really bad by the way. Might as well have all players playing Snipers.)

In conclusion, I think all those multiplayer games need is..

You should know that games is not only for kids, it is for adults too. (If you think only kids can play video games, you shouldn’t be reading this blog.. (¬_¬) ) I’ve watch most of my friends grown up to become a gamer dad. It’s kinda ackward moment for me actually. One minute we’re talking about Socom or Killzone, the next minute we’re talking about playing LittleBigPlanet or Sports Champion. And sometimes, the dreaded subject.. Wii (because I don’t own one).

That’s ok I guess because I play those games too, except for Wii. I don’t consider myself casual nor hardcore gamers, probably somewhere in between. One thing I can’t stand is they actually use their kid’s name as their username. Oh why??? It’s weird to call someone with their children’s name. And the worst one is where they put Papa or Daddy infront of it. I feel like I’ve been a bad boy calling them that. *spank*

Other than that, gamer dads are cool. I wish I have one. Then he can help me with ~~homework~~ co-op games like Army of Two and Gears of Wars. Maybe it’s time to buy that Tiger Woods game to lure him into playing video games. ( ﾟ∀ﾟ) Muahahahaha~~

Eat, Work, Play

I’m in a love hate relationship with my job. Sometimes, I freakin love it. Some other times, I felt like dying. Is it my dream job? Nope. But I enjoy working there. The environment is nice. Feels like a family, a really big family.

The real problem it gets stagnant every once in a while. I get easily bored with repetitive tasks. And this got me thinking, should I quit my job?

He has been missing since April and he left this blog un-updated.

According to witness @sheentj , she last saw the suspect at the workplace leaving with a copy of LA Noire. However, the game was only released last May and that doesn’t explain his disappearance since the fourth month.

Update: According to the suspect Steam account, the suspect preordered Dragon Age 2 and the Witcher 2. This is the main reason why the suspect has not update his blog. According to most gamers, Dragon Age 2 doesn’t live up to their expectation and this provoked them to buy Witcher 2. Witcher 2 as we all know is a gut wrenching game, designed to test the hardcore level of a gamer. Suspect was probably frustrated playing Witcher 2 and forget all about his blog.

Update 2: The suspect has been caught. He is now sentenced to update the design of his blog and write a statement declaring his insanity.

I hate stealth games

Recently, I bought a game called Socom 4. Tactical 3PS (nice… reminds me of ME2) , Grace Park (yeahhh!!!. Everything was great until I discovered that there’s a stealth level in Socom 4. *FUUUUUUUUUU*

I just can’t believe how a simple game like this can be so addictive. Maybe because it’s just cute and annoying at the same time.

The objective is simple. To slingshot a bird across the field to hit the pigs on the platform. You could hit an object to make it fell on the pig to gain points. Of course, the less bird you throw, the more points you get.

However, it is not all that easy. Some structures are stronger than usual. You just have to hit the right spot to make it all come tumbling down.

Overall, it’s worth to spend your $0.99 (RM 3) on this fun game.

It has been quite some time since I last blogged. All due to my inability to write for a while. It’s all because of writer’s block. Literally writer’s block.

My tools of creating expressive thoughts aka my laptop was out of service due to keyboard failure. I can’t even logon to my banking account with it . Thus I decided to let it be while I find some other way to express my thoughts (aka twitter). So to all my friends, sorry if I kept spamming the timeline.

So now I got my laptop back, and business will resume as usual. Can’t say much about GamerMalaya though, because a ship can’t run with only a captain.

2010 was quite a year. I return to Magic the Gathering (MtG). And World of Warcraft(WoW). Rexxdelarocha died. Reborn as Rexxarro. Crazy crazy stuff.

I hope this year would be as wonderful as last year. More games, more friends, more fun. And this brings to my new year resolutions:

1. To join events and tournaments in MtG and make more friends.

2. To know at least have the friends in PSN list. Lol.

Recently, my email has been hacked and the perpetrator has been trying to get the password for accounts I used with my email. So the best thing to do is to change all my passwords for my accounts.

However, for World of Warcraft, I finally got a Battle.Net Authenticator. It’s a simple little device that binds with your account and generate a series of numbers for you to use for login. What I didn't expect was I received a Core Hound Pup as a pet.

Aww… so cute. Now go and bite that designer who nerf pallies.

If you still don’t have a Battle.Net Authenticator, you might as well get one quick. For safety reason of course, not for that awfully cute core hound pup.

I’ve never been a fan of First Person Shooter. I prefer to see the whole embodiment of the persona that you’re playing as. And I do sometimes suffer from the motion sickness.

In my college days however, two games that have redefined on how I look upon FPS. Counter Strike and Medal of Honor :Allied Assault. Me and my buddies would setup LAN over 3 stories high just that we would have a LAN party that night. And you could hear “bombing” and “shooting” all night long.

The remake of Medal of Honor is something I look forward to. The single player experience took place in Afghanistan, where you’re playing as a Tier 1 operator. It follows the style of another similar game, Modern Warfare. Epic gunfights, fascinating storyline, and this is in the modern times, the recent war.

I love the multiplayer, how each map is “just the right size” for each battle. It does get a little stale over time, and the grinding to unlock and level up your classes of “Rifleman”, “Special Ops” and “Sniper” is just not my cup of tea.

Yeah, who am I to judge. I’m a RPG kind of guy. I do enjoy a game of Team Fortress 2 occasionally. So this is kind of “on par” in the FPS genre. I’ll give it 4 out of 5.

Yes, it is out. On Steam (PC), X-Box Live, and PSN. To be honest, I have never played the previous game because of the poor reviews. My expectation? Nothing.

The demo start with you using Lynch trying to escape from the police. It’s a Third Person Shooter with ala Gears of War cover mechanic. But it reminds me a lot of Army of Two. The only thing I don’t like is the grainy effect and it seems I can’t turn it off (or tune it down a lil).

Other than that, it’s a great game. Coop anyone?

So I went to a meeting with my clients this week, and it was 300 km away. After the long *whole* day trip, I decided I’m gonna stay in bed over this weekend.

The thing is, I woke up at 11 am, reaching for my phone, and call the McDonald delivery service. 10 minutes later (yes, 10 minutes later, which is quite strange. They usually deliver around 45- 60 minute.) I had to get up from bed to pay the delivery guy. After a quick meal, I went back to bed.

And in my head, I wish I had the force so I wouldn’t have to get up at all.

May the force be with you. And no, you won’t get your 5 minutes back.

I recently purchased an X-Box 360 Elite bundle with two games, Gears of War 2 and Halo 3 ODST. The price? 1,1XX. Which is the lowest price in the market so far (7/4/2010).

So.. why the hell it is so cheap? This is why. The same X-Box 360 set cost $499 Singapore Dollars. Meanwhile in Hong Kong, it costs $2469 HK Dollars. (You can look it up on the official site.)

Quite a difference huh? Anyway, I had to get an Asian set (something about region-based content). If I got a US set…

Honestly, I’ve always been supportive with the Video Games Industry, buying their original games etc. But Ubisoft have done something terrible. DRM. To make the matter even worse, it requires you to be always online to play the game. I was like “What the f-? Always Online?? We live in Malaysia, for god sake.. “ (No offense Streamyx).

So, Pirates 1 – Ubisoft 0. It’s a predictable scoreline.

Jokes aside, it’s much better than it’s predecessors. While the first movie was pretty much straight forward, a lot of stuff were thrown in the second movie (Probably the keep the dumb blondes as far away as possible from Tony Stark).

A few days ago, I’d watched Turtles Forever. No, it’s nothing like Batman Forever. And no Rexx, they are not naked, they’re wearing shells.

So what’s so great about this 3 episodes of TMNT which span into a movie? It has 3 version of Turtles. The “2003” serious Turtles, the “1987” goofy Turtles and the “original comic” turtles. All together, fighting the 3 version of Shredder. Although I couldn’t remember if the “1987” Shreddy.. I mean Shredder is as goofy as he is in the movie. He’s like the clown of the show.

Anyway, I miss the old show. And the old theme song. It’s awesome right?

So I started reading comics again. A Green Lantern movie was in the works so I thought, “Oh hell, why not..”

But ever since Disney buyoff Marvel, I never looked at Marvel the same way again. Just like DC. Remember the scene from “Justice League – A New Frontier” where Jonn turn into Bugs Bunny from Looney Tunes. It’s like that, but much worse. Whenever I saw Wolverine again, I see a duck, with no pants.

So which is better? The rabbit or the duck?

Anyway, I’m 5% into the Blackest Night event. Not bad, DC. Not bad.

And I love Zombie Apocalypse. Bonus point there.

I've been working hard this week to make sure a 'certain' project got delivered and making my clients satisfied with the outcome of the project. (◕‿◕)
To be honest, I'm not sure if I'm a programmer anymore. I spend more time dealing with clients instead of programming. The sad thing is, this is STILL on trial basis which means I'm still getting paid as a programmer. Yeah, it sucks. I'm just hoping I'll get a new contract soon. ($_$) Here's to 2010. Huzzah!!

Yeah, that's how I feel. I have a "only one active MMO" rule. This is because what happened during my subscription with Warhammer and WoW. I just don't have enough time to play both games.
WoW Cataclysm, Star Wars The Old Republic, DC Universe Online and now this. I just hope Bioware/EA doesn't release Dragon's Age Online or Mass Effect Universe.
